USMCA Takes Effect but North American Trade Tensions Remain

WASHINGTON—The U.S.-Mexico-Canada Settlement kicks in Wednesday, but the fruits of yrs of negotiations won’t automatically necessarily mean the finish of trade tensions between the a few North American nations.

Even as the deal formally will take impact, contentious problems that prolonged the negotiations are re-emerging as sore spots—including U.S. tariffs on metals, Mexico’s labor benchmarks, Canada’s defense of its dairy sector and new policies on automotive output.
