Dozens of Inmates Die in Latest Prison Riot in Ecuador

At the very least 68 inmates ended up killed and 25 injured at a jail in Ecuador’s coastal metropolis of Guayaquil, the lawyer general’s workplace said Saturday, as President Guillermo Lasso’s governing administration grappled with growing violence.

The most recent bloodshed commenced Friday evening at the infamous Litoral jail, wherever officials described a “complete massacre” in which imprisoned gang associates broke down partitions and burned mattresses to smoke out inmates in a rival pavilion, and then attacked them with knives.
